318 to 50 - The road to the bluegrass state

Nice casual trip to Kentucky today to visit my sister and Niece who just turned 5!

319 to 50 - Bowling night

Solid bowling night, another sweep, another 665. Game is coming together.

320 to 50 - Game night

Played a fun little game called Pegs and Jokers.  Good fun to be had by all.

322 to 50 - Logging soreness

Spent a good portion of the afternoon yesterday splitting, cutting, and stacking firewood.  Great exercise and obviously what I need to do more of.  Cause today was a bit sore....

323 to 50 - Chicken Coop

Step 3 in the process of getting our own chicken eggs is the coop. Today we picked up and set in place our coop. Next is getting a protective fence in place and then just wait for the hatch.

324 to 50 - Mediocre Golf

Fun day but mediocre golf even for my standards. Better days are on the horizon.

325 to 50 - Home movie night

An odd little movie called Significant Other, and an 80s cult classic The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai.

326 to 50 - Bowling, groundhog day edition

A nice little night post tournament weekend. Timing was good, carry was OK, corner pin spares, not so much.

327 to 50 - Beard reduction

There comes a time in the late winter were reducing the beard is a must.  That day was today and hopefully the spring weather doesn't make me regret it!

Also today was another workout for shoulders, back, and hips.  We are about ready to take a serious jump in weight.

328 to 50 - Last day of deep freeze

Been pretty cold the past 4 days, but that changes tomorrow and ends with a nice weekend.  Might be time to shorten the winter beard.

329 to 50 - The Monday after

AFC Championship on Sunday night leads to a tired Monday after.

331 to 50 - Tournament day 1

Ehhh, not a great or impressive day.  But it was a day, and the team event is down.  Here is hoping for a better result in doubles and singles....

332 to 50 - Pre-tournament day

Bowling a tournament tomorrow and Sunday so today was a long day at work, and a prep day for bowling equipment.  Tomorrow, time to perform.

333 to 50 - Bowling night

Bowling night tonight. Odd night since the lane machine was broken the lanes were dry as the Sahara.
But all lanes must be played, and we overcame the conditions and won all 4. Solid night.

334 to 50 - Nap attack

A normal day and an after work nap attack that derailed evening workout activities. Oh well, sometimes you just need sleep.

335 to 50 - Movie night

Went to a good little movie tonight by the name of M3gan.  Cool scifi/horror with some good thought provoking themes about AI and our integration with technology.  A solid entertaining 3/5 stars.

336 to 50 - Back at activities

Short but increasingly heavy workout today:

337 to 50 - Rod Making

For the past couple years I've been planning to make and repair my fishing rods.  Having purchased a couple kits and some miscellaneous supplies I had neglected to put all to use for almost two years now.  So today was the day to start the project.  Building a rod needs a blank, grip, reel seat, and guides.  Today was finding the spline (the preferred side to bend) and gluing the grip and reel seat.  Tomorrow will be finding and affixing the guides.

338 to 50 - Epic sports day

KSU win!  KC Chiefs win!  Great sports day!

340 to 50 - Bowling on empty

Supposedly there will come a day during a low carb, keto style diet but not this day. Still feeling solid, but energy is low. Hopefully a day or two more and we will be able to continue this diet and also exercise.
Decent bowling night though with a 646 series.

341 to 50 - Meat and more meat

Day two of eating all meat to clear out my system and do a bit of elimination testing.  Feel fine, but dang all I smell is stale hamburger meat all day everywhere.  Hopefully this stops soon.

342 to 50 - Diet change

Starting today and lasting a week or so, I've started the Carnivore Diet.  Basically only meat and animal products.  Technically you can have dairy but since I'm using this as an elimination diet to determine some food insensitivities I'll only be using a bit of butter for cooking and eggs.

We shall see how this feels after the first 48 hrs.

343 to 50 - The surgery

Today was a great day.  Good January weather, golf, fun folks, etc.

But this story is about the past not the present.  So the break happened because a ski binding failed to release as I fell forward, twisting off inside the boot.   As I slid down the hill leg flopping like a wet noodle I knew that all was not ok.  The ski patrol came to collect me, strap me down to a sled, and later assess the damage in the first aid station.  There was no doubt it was broke.

Fast forward a bit and saving you the brutal details of the break, hospital stay in New Mexico, attempt to set the break, and trip back to KS, we are now at the surgery.

Unfortunately because of the type of break a surgery was required that held the break together (see photo below).  3 1/2 months of the pins, 7 months of casts, and 2 years later I was almost whole again.

344 to 50 - The injury

Skiing sounded so fun. Snow, cold, beautiful mountains, fresh air. The short version of what happened is after a long day starting with lessons, and learning the mountain, a frozen ski binding and an inability to slow down on icy conditions lead to a massive fraction of my right lower leg.  The ski didn't come off and a fall forward lead to a twisting break inside the ski boot.  Spiral fractures don't set so I was destined for surgery.

345 to 50 - The trip

This weekend 35 years ago was supposed to be a fun new experience in the beautiful mountains of Northern New Mexico.  What ended up happening was an injury that still impacts me physically to this day.
The trip was to experience skiing for the first time with my dad, uncle, and cousin while staying in their condo in Angel Fire New Mexico.
We arrived late on a Friday with the skiing adventure to occur the next morning.
To Be Continued...

346 to 50 - Teaser about a past injury

This weekend marks the 35 year anniversary of a grotesque injury that changed the course of my life...

Stay tuned for the story tomorrow....

347 to 50 - Bowling thy name is mediocre

Eh, sometimes passible is about as good as it gets.  Odd that the days you feel the best are not days you always perform you best.  On to next week....

349 to 50 - Looking for the right formula

Sometimes moving forward means backing up and taking another path.

350 to 50 - Chumpionship Game

Long day at work, then work at home.  No entertainment in this dismal NCAA CFP Championship game.

351 to 50 - Golf-a-palooza

One of my major undertakings this past 9 months has been to become a semi-competent golfer.  Ordered new clubs back in March, played regularly through the rest of 2022, bought a golf cart in July, got a golf course membership in September, bought a new driver later that month, and have shaved about 20-25 strokes off my game.

Today were the first rounds of 2023 and they went quite well.  A career best 93, and a follow up 49 on an additional nine holes.  Can't beat golf in early January and can't beat a career best to start the year!

Oh and a great by product of golf is always hitting the 10,000 step goal.  Fun combined with fitness is a winning combination.

352 to 50 - Good sports day, short workout

 Some days are just charmed.

KC Chiefs are the #1 seed and getting the playoff bye after trouncing the Raiders in Vegas.  K-State Basketball wins their 3rd conference game in a row (last two on the road) all over ranked opponents.

Oh and got a little workout in:

353 to 50 - Cheat day

Sometimes you just need a little BBQ and a beer.  As long as one day doesn't become a cascade of bad diet days, no harm no foul.

354 to 50 - First bowling night of 2023

Long work day and no exercise day today.  BUT, first day of bowling league of the calendar year.

Slow start with a 158, then a serviceable 192, and a bang up 255 to finish with a 605 series.   Lot of work to do and the mechanics are not where they need to be but I'll take it.

Wednesday, January 4, 2023

355 to 50 - A rest day

A day of rest, a day of solid diet.  When a rigorous day of exercise is not in order just...don't...backslide.

Tuesday, January 3, 2023

356 to 50 - First day of work, workout at home

Back to work today with a nice quiet day to get caught up before beginning of the semester madness.  Always tough to get a workout in after work, but here it is...

Monday, January 2, 2023

357 to 50 - Meal Prep Day

The key to eating well and keeping control of your diet is meal prepping.  So today is laundry, meal prep, and getting ready to battle the challenges of keeping a routine through the work week.

358 to 50 - New Year, New Approach

New year, old goals, new approach...  Happy New Year!
